SUNGLASSES THROUGH THE AGES

We all wear them ... We all love them  ... But how much do we really know about them?

In prehistoric and historic time, Inuit peoples wore flattened walrus ivory "glasses," looking through narrow slits to block harmful reflected rays of the sun. It is said that the Roman emperor Nero liked to watch gladiator fights with emeralds. These, however, appear to have worked rather like mirrors.
Sunglasses made from flat panes of smoky quartz, which offered no corrective powers but did protect the eyes from glare were used in China in the 12th century or possibly earlier.
Ancient documents describe the use of such crystal sunglasses by judges in ancient Chinese courts to conceal their facial expressions while questioning witnesses.

First sunglasses ever made

James Ayscough began experimenting with tinted lenses in spectacles in the mid-18th century, around 1752. These were not "sunglasses" as that term is now used; Ayscough believed blue- or green-tinted glass could correct for specific vision impairments. Protection from the Sun's rays was not a concern for him.

Yellow/amber and brown-tinted spectacles were also a commonly prescribed item for people with syphilis in the 19th and early 20th centuries because sensitivity to light was one of the symptoms of the disease.

Modern developments

In the early 1900s, the use of sunglasses started to become more widespread, especially among stars of movies. It is commonly believed that this was to avoid recognition by fans, but an alternative reason sometimes given is that they often had red eyes from the powerful arc lamps that were needed due to the extremely slow speed film stocks used. The stereotype persisted long after improvements in film quality and the introduction of ultraviolet filters had eliminated this problem.

The 1950s

For women, the hot 1950s sunglasses style was the cat eye. With their upswept design, cat eye sunglasses were glamorous enough for icons Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn! Here Marilyn wears narrow cat eyes with a dramatic upsweep. Audrey’s cat eyes are more dramatic in size than shape. For the modern woman, cat eye sunglasses are a popular style of retro women’s sunglasses.

The 1960s

The political and social climate of the time was most definitely reflected in the fashion. The 1960s wardrobe included tie dyes, bell bottoms, miniskirts, crazy patterns, and mod style. Hairstyles ranged from the Afro, to the mop top, to long and straight on hippies, to short mod bobs.
All these eccentricities affected 1960s sunglasses in a big way. Huge, bug-eyed, oversized sunglasses became the rage. Iconic women like first lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis made popular her large “Jackie O sunglasses.” Actress, model, and singer Brigitte Bardot was also known for big sunglasses.

The 1970's

In terms of style, the 70s bring to mind polyester three-piece leisure suits, sideburns, peroxide blonde hair, and a color palate of orange, brown, olive green, and lime green.
Most 1970s sunglasses were big in size, and plastic, wire, and rimless frames were all popular. In the 70s, you also started seeing variations in lens color. Jane Fonda wore a lens that starts dark and fades to light in “Klute.” And so is Diane Keaton in “Annie Hall.”

The 1980's

As for fashion, a new wave of capitalism meant that designer clothes and eccentric style was in. Thanks to the popularity of 1980s themed parties, we all know 80s fashion is shoulder pads, jean jackets, big hair, jumpsuits, miniskirts, neon or bright colors, leggings, leg warmers, off-the-shoulder shirts, and acid wash jeans.
These eccentricities made their way into sunglass style as well. For women, this meant colorful, plastic stand-out frames. Princess Diana wore a pair of oversized, white sunglasses in the 80s. At the time, she would have been a newlywed and pregnant with Prince William.

The 1990's

Wire round sunglasses were popular for women in the 1990s. Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen loved the style as did Courtney Cox.

Today we have a mixture of all these styles.

My favorites are Prada baroque and classical Ray Ban aviator sunglasses.

What are your favorite sunglasses? :)

..................................................................................................................................................................
Svi ih volimo....Svi ih nosimo...Ali koliko zapravo znamo o njima?!

1950

1970

U pogledu stila, 70e dovode poliesterska odela, zulufe, blajhanu plavu kosu, braon boju, maslinasto zelenu i limeta zelenu boju.

1980
